The Purple Leaf Birch offers a striking twist on our native silver birch, with rich purple foliage that creates a real focal point in gardens. New leaves appear in spring showing deep burgundy tones, gradually shifting to purple-green through the summer months. The characteristic white bark provides beautiful contrast with the dark foliage, ensuring year-round visual appeal. Like the common silver birch, the branches display an elegant weeping form that moves gracefully in even light winds. This tree brings excellent height and visual impact to gardens whilst keeping a relatively compact footprint. Come autumn, the foliage transforms to lovely golden hues before dropping to showcase the attractive white bark throughout winter. It’s an excellent option for smaller gardens when you fancy something more unusual than typical tree choices.

Position your Purple Leaf Birch in full sun for the richest purple leaf colouring. It tolerates most soil conditions but works best in slightly acidic to neutral ground. Water thoroughly during the first growing season to encourage strong root development. Once established, it handles dry spells quite well. Regular feeding isn’t essential – just apply general fertiliser in spring if growth appears sluggish. Avoid pruning during late winter or early spring as birches tend to ‘bleed’ sap – if pruning is needed, tackle it in late summer or early autumn.
