The Blue Colorado Spruce ‘Fat Albert’ is a fantastic evergreen tree with intense steel-blue needles that create a stunning display all year round. This variety has a fuller, broader shape than other blue spruces, making it a real stand-out specimen. The dense branches grow in a perfect Christmas tree shape without any trimming needed. Its chunky, symmetrical form is what gave it the charming name ‘Fat Albert’. The needles have a lovely silvery sheen that sparkles in sunlight and looks particularly magical when touched by frost. Growing steadily to about 6-8 metres, it’s slower and more compact than regular Colorado Spruce. The strong architectural shape works brilliantly in both modern and traditional gardens. It makes a superb focal point and looks great when planted where its blue colour can contrast with dark green evergreens or bright flowers.
‘Fat Albert’ is a straightforward tree to grow in most garden conditions. It needs full sun to develop its best blue colour and does well in any well-drained soil. While young trees need regular watering in their first couple of years, mature specimens are quite drought-hardy. No regular pruning is needed as it naturally keeps its shape. An annual feed with evergreen fertiliser in spring will keep it looking its best. Though generally pest-resistant, keep an eye out for aphids in spring.
