£14.55

Cedrus atlantica glauca, commonly known as the Blue Atlas Cedar, is a majestic evergreen that’s native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Known for its impressive height and pyramid-like form, it provides an eye-catching display year-round with its silvery-blue to bluish-green needle-like leaves. The tree’s mature specimens develop broad, barrel-shaped cones, adding to its ornamental value.

This cedar variety thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, and is fairly resistant to harsh weather conditions, making it a robust and low-maintenance choice for landscaping. Its aesthetic appeal and sturdy nature make it a popular selection for parks and large gardens.

The Atlas Cedar Cedrus atlantica is a stunning evergreen that adds North African mountain elegance to British gardens. This magnificent conifer originates from the Atlas Mountains across Morocco and Algeria, celebrated for its distinctive blue-green foliage and commanding presence.

Young Atlas Cedars display a neat pyramidal form, slowly evolving into a more spreading, flat-topped silhouette with age. The short, rigid needles cluster densely along the branches, creating a full and luxurious appearance. The blue-green hue of the leaves is particularly eye-catching, most notably in varieties such as the well-loved ‘Glauca’.

What makes the Atlas Cedar particularly captivating is its appeal throughout the seasons. Beyond its persistent evergreen leaves, the tree develops substantial, upright barrel-shaped cones along its branches. These cones require nearly two years to fully develop, providing ongoing visual interest.

Atlas Cedars grow steadily but live for many decades, representing a worthwhile investment for your garden’s long-term future. They eventually achieve considerable heights, serving as magnificent centrepieces in spacious gardens. The wide-spreading branches offer lovely dappled shade, creating perfect spots for summer relaxation.

Beyond their ornamental value, these trees support local wildlife. Birds frequently nest within their branches and seek shelter among the dense foliage, while the cone seeds provide nourishment for various garden visitors. The thick canopy also serves as an effective windbreak, making the Atlas Cedar both practical and beautiful.

Atlas Cedars prefer full sun and well-drained soil. They’re tolerant of various soil types but don’t do well in waterlogged conditions. Plant in a sheltered spot to protect from harsh winds, especially when young. Water regularly during the first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, they’re quite drought-tolerant. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches, as these trees naturally maintain their shape. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring if growth seems slow. Be patient, as Atlas Cedars are slow-growing but will reward you with their beauty over many years.
