Atlas Cedar ‘Horstmann Silberspitz’ Cedrus atlantica is a gorgeous evergreen that adds silvery charm to gardens. This particular variety is known for its lovely blue-green needles with silver tips, which create a lovely shimmering look when the light hits them. It grows slowly and forms a wide, pyramid shape as it matures, making it ideal for gardeners wanting a lasting feature in their space.
‘Horstmann Silberspitz’ usually grows to around 4-6 metres high over 20 years, at a pace that won’t take over your garden. Its neat size makes it suitable for medium to large gardens, and it can even work in a large container on a patio. The silver-tipped leaves look good all year round and are especially lovely when set against darker green plants or the sky.
This tree really helps to bring a sense of grandeur to gardens. Its strong shape and special colouring make it a natural centrepiece, catching attention and giving structure to your garden layout. The silvery tips catch the light beautifully, adding brightness even on dull days – which is handy in our climate.
Many gardeners pick ‘Horstmann Silberspitz’ because it’s easy to look after and very hardy. After it’s settled in, it handles dry spells well and can cope with city pollution, so it’s good for urban gardens. It also fights off most pests and diseases, meaning less work for you.
This cedar fits into different garden styles nicely. It can bring formal appeal to classic gardens or add structure and winter colour to more natural planting designs. You can grow it on its own as a feature tree, or plant several together for an impressive screen or windbreak.
For gardeners wanting year-round structure and silver beauty in their gardens, Atlas Cedar ‘Horstmann Silberspitz’ is a great pick. Its lovely leaves, strong shape, and simple care needs make it a worthwhile choice for any outdoor area.
Caring for Atlas Cedar ‘Horstmann Silberspitz’ is relatively straightforward, which is good news for gardeners. Plant it in a spot that gets full sun, as this will help develop the best foliage colour. It prefers well-drained soil but can adapt to various soil types. Water regularly when it’s first planted to help it establish. Once settled, it’s quite drought-tolerant but will appreciate occasional deep watering during dry spells. You don’t need to feed it often – a light application of balanced fertiliser in spring is enough. Pruning isn’t necessary to maintain its shape, but you can remove any dead or damaged branches if needed. Keep an eye out for any signs of needle browning or dieback, which could indicate stress. ‘Horstmann Silberspitz’ is hardy in most parts of the UK, but in very cold areas, it might appreciate some shelter from harsh winds, especially when young.
