The Deodar Cedar Cedrus deodara is a magnificent coniferous tree that brings a touch of the Himalayas to British gardens. This evergreen beauty is prized for its stunning appearance and year-round interest. What makes it particularly striking are the gracefully drooping branches that form a weeping outline, rather like mountain mists flowing down hillsides. The soft, blue-green needles grow in thick clusters, creating a feathery texture that balances the tree’s impressive size. Young trees have a neat pyramid shape, whilst older ones develop a more spreading, flattened crown that can reach considerable widths.
During autumn, the tree becomes even more attractive with its cones: male trees show small, finger-like catkins, whilst female trees display larger, barrel-shaped cones that sit upright on branches like decorative features. These cones can last for several years, providing seasonal interest. The bark of the Deodar Cedar adds another appealing element, developing into dark grey, cracked patterns with age that look wonderful against the blue-green foliage. In British gardens, this noble tree makes an excellent centrepiece, with its commanding height – typically reaching 20–30 metres – bringing a sense of ancient majesty.

The Deodar Cedar is relatively low-maintenance once established, making it suitable for gardeners of various experience levels. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. This tree prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but is adaptable to various soil types as long as they’re not waterlogged. Young trees benefit from regular watering, especially during dry spells, but once established, they’re quite drought-tolerant. Pruning isn’t usually necessary as the tree naturally develops an attractive shape. However, you can remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter if needed. The Deodar Cedar is generally resistant to pests and diseases, adding to its low-maintenance appeal. It’s important to choose the planting site carefully, considering the tree’s eventual size and spread. Protect young trees from strong winds until they’re well-established. With proper care, this magnificent tree can live for several hundred years, becoming a long-lasting feature in your landscape.

Seeds
We generally send seeds out via Royal Mail Second Class. It’s the safest and easiest way to deliver seeds.
Young Trees
Young trees (Less than 1.2m) will generally be sent via Evri.
Larger quantities of young trees will be sent via ParcelForce or pallet courier..
Huge Trees
Some of our huge trees are too tall to be sent via a courier. They are generally only available for collection from our nursery, local delivery or via occasionally pallet courier. This will be shown on the individual product page.
