The Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa is also known as the Japanese cypress. The ‘Aurora’ cultivar stands out amongst the many varieties thanks to its vibrant colouring.

‘Aurora’ is well-loved for its neat, conical shape, which means it needs very little looking after.

‘Aurora’ has a slow growth habit and stays nicely compact. It usually develops a rounded bottom section with a pointed top.

‘Aurora’ does best in well-draining soil, just like other Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa types. It can cope with different soil conditions provided they don’t hold too much water. Whilst it loves full sun, which brings out its golden tones beautifully, it’s quite happy in partial shade too.

With its gorgeous golden-green colour and tidy shape, ‘Aurora’ works brilliantly for highlighting rock gardens, border edges, or as a feature plant in pots and containers. It’s also great in mixed displays where it creates lovely colour contrasts alongside other plants.

‘Aurora’ hardly ever needs trimming because it grows so slowly. Water it well during the first few years and when it’s particularly dry, but make sure it never sits in waterlogged soil.

Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Aurora’ is really tough once established and can handle freezing temperatures down to -20C.
