Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa is commonly called Japanese cypress. The cultivar ‘Kosteri’ stands out as a popular spreading shrub with a cone-shaped form.
‘Kosteri’, also called ‘Nana Kosteri’, is chosen for its shiny dark green leaves on distinctively twisted stems and its low, broad growing pattern.
This cultivar has a slow growth rate and stays reasonably compact, getting to 2.5 metres tall.
Like other Hinoki cypress varieties, ‘Kosteri’ prefers soil that drains well. It will grow in different soil types provided they don’t hold too much water. Though it does best in full sun, it also grows well in dappled shade.
Its compact nature makes ‘Kosteri’ perfect for highlighting rock gardens, borders, or as a single feature plant in pots or containers.
‘Kosteri’ seldom needs pruning because it grows slowly. Water regularly during the first few years and in long dry periods, but avoid waterlogged conditions.
Hinoki cypress ‘Kosteri’ Chamaecyparis obtusa is tough once established and handles cold down to -20C.
