Hinoki Cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Tempelhof’ is a cultivated variety of this Japanese coniferous evergreen tree. This particular cultivar stands out amongst other Hinoki Cypress varieties for its unique characteristics.

‘Tempelhof’ maintains the classic yellow-green foliage of Hinoki Cypress but grows into a neat, pointed dome shape. The evergreen leaves start off bright yellow with a distinctive cup-shaped appearance, gradually deepening to yellow-green as they age. In winter, the leaf edges develop attractive bronzy-brown tints. This shrub works brilliantly for creating height in mixed borders and rock gardens, bringing elegance to outdoor spaces.

With its striking golden-green colour and tidy growth habit, ‘Tempelhof’ works well in rock gardens, borders, or grown solo in containers. It’s also popular in mixed plantings where it creates lovely colour contrasts alongside other plants.

‘Tempelhof’ is relatively easy to care for, making it ideal for both novice and experienced gardeners. Plant it in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade for the best foliage colour. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but will tolerate most soil types. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system, then reduce watering as it matures. This cypress is drought-tolerant once established. Pruning isn’t necessary, but you can lightly trim in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape if desired. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth.
