Sawara Cypress ‘Sungold’ Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Sungold’ is a delightful compact conifer that adds bright golden tones to gardens. This slowly developing evergreen shrub works well in smaller areas, amongst rockeries, or as a standout feature in planted borders. The bright yellow-gold leaves maintain their colour all year round, offering lovely contrast alongside deeper green foliage. During winter months, the needles develop subtle bronze hints, providing visual appeal when many other plants have died back.

‘Sungold’ grows into a neat, rounded shape that seldom requires trimming, making it perfect for gardeners who want something straightforward. It usually grows to around 1-1.5 metres tall and wide after 10 years, suiting gardens both large and small. The delicate, soft texture of the foliage brings a pleasant feel to gardens and works well to blur harsh lines in your planting scheme.

This Sawara cypress variety suits our climate well, doing best in full sun through to light shade. It’s perfect for gardeners wanting to add structure and colour that lasts throughout the seasons. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or new to growing plants, ‘Sungold’ is straightforward to grow and will add pleasure to your garden for many years.

Sawara Cypress ‘Sungold’ is relatively easy to care for, which is good news for UK gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil, but it’s adaptable to various soil types. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it appreciates consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of drought. Feed it with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring if desired, but it generally doesn’t require much feeding. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you want to maintain a specific shape or size. If you need to prune, do it in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
