The English Holly *Ilex aquifolium*, at 20-40cm in a 2-litre pot, is a lovely little specimen that’s perfect for getting started in your garden. This compact size gives your holly the best chance to establish well, whether you’re planning a stunning hedge or simply want some evergreen structure in your borders. English Holly is a brilliant British native, well-known for its distinctive spiky, glossy dark green foliage that we all associate with festive decorations. As this young plant matures, it develops into a dense, bushy form that’s ideal for creating privacy screens and natural barriers.
Though it’s small now, this holly has the potential to grow into a sizeable shrub or small tree, possibly reaching 15 metres given enough time – but it responds well to pruning if you prefer to keep it more compact. During late spring, you’ll notice clusters of small white flowers appearing, which will develop into those famous bright red berries come autumn, provided you have both male and female plants nearby. These vibrant berries provide valuable winter food for garden birds when other sources are scarce.
Holly’s remarkably hardy, tolerating various soil conditions and weather. As a native species, it thrives in our climate and offers excellent support for local wildlife. Many birds choose to nest within its protective branches, and it serves as a host plant for holly blue butterflies.
Plant your holly in sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. It’s not fussy about soil type but prefers it a bit on the acidic side. Water regularly until it’s settled in, especially during dry spells. A yearly feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring will keep it ticking over nicely. Prune in winter or early spring to keep it in shape. Remember, only female plants produce berries, and they need a male nearby for pollination.
