Variegated Hollywood Juniper – Chinese Juniper Juniperus chinensis ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ is a beautiful evergreen that adds style and year-round colour to gardens. This lovely variety catches the eye with its mixed green and cream-white foliage that creates a bright, lively display. It grows upright but slowly, developing an unusual open shape that makes it ideal for gardeners wanting something a bit different.

Over 10 years, ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ usually reaches around 3-4 metres high and spreads 1.5-2 metres wide, though it can grow taller given time. Its distinctive form works brilliantly as a standout feature in all sorts of garden styles, whether you prefer clean modern looks or classic traditional designs. The cream and green leaves look good throughout the year, and the irregular branching creates lovely shadows and patterns, particularly when lit up at night.

This juniper brings a real sense of brightness and character to outdoor spaces. The tall, open growth habit naturally draws attention and adds visual interest to garden layouts. Those cream-splashed leaves give a fresh, light feeling that suits both contemporary gardens and Asian-themed designs perfectly.

Many gardeners pick ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ because it looks fantastic but doesn’t demand much fuss. After it settles in, it handles different soils well and puts up with city air pollution, so it’s brilliant for urban gardens. It shrugs off most pest and disease problems too, meaning less worry for busy gardeners.

This versatile juniper fits into gardens in lots of ways. Use it as a show-stopping single specimen, plant several for an attractive screen, or let it provide a backdrop for other plants. It’s perfect for marking entrances, adding height to rock gardens, or even growing in a big pot on the patio.

Bird lovers will appreciate that junipers offer safe nesting spots and shelter. The thick foliage gives birds somewhere to hide from predators and bad weather.

Anyone wanting a plant that stays attractive year-round without constant attention should consider ‘Kaizuka Variegata’. It keeps its special shape and colourful leaves through every season, giving gardens ongoing appeal.

Chinese Junipers have been garden favourites for generations thanks to their tough nature and adaptability. The ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ form adds extra colour to this reliable plant, combining typical juniper toughness with brilliant visual appeal.

Gardeners wanting to build year-round structure whilst adding bright colour will find Chinese Juniper ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ fits the bill perfectly. The pretty variegated leaves, distinctive growth habit, and low-maintenance character make it worthwhile for any garden, particularly when you want something genuinely eye-catching.

Caring for Chinese Juniper ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ is relatively straightforward. Plant it in a spot that gets full sun to partial shade – full sun will help maintain the best variegation. It prefers well-drained soil but can adapt to various soil types, including poor or rocky soils. Water regularly when it’s first planted to help it establish. Once settled, it’s quite drought-tolerant but will appreciate occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. You don’t need to feed it often – a light application of slow-release fertiliser in spring is enough. Pruning isn’t necessary to maintain its shape, but you can trim it lightly if you want to control its size or enhance its form. Keep an eye out for any signs of browning or dieback, which could indicate stress. ‘Kaizuka Variegata’ is very hardy and can cope with winters without extra protection, even in exposed or coastal areas.
