Common Juniper Juniperus communis ‘Repanda’ is a tough and adaptable evergreen shrub that works brilliantly as ground cover in all sorts of gardens. This compact variety grows to just 30-60cm tall but spreads 2-3 metres wide, forming a thick carpet of attractive foliage.

The soft, needle-like leaves grow in clusters along the stems. These needles show off a lovely blue-green shade that stays the same all year round, giving your garden constant structure and colour. The result is a rich, textured mat that works well to soften patios and paths whilst making a great base for other plants.

‘Repanda’ stands out for being so easy-going and low-fuss. It grows well in most soils, whether sandy or heavy clay, as long as water can drain away properly. Once it gets going, it handles dry spells really well, which makes it perfect for gardens that need less watering or spots that don’t get much care.

This juniper does lots of jobs in the garden. Its spreading growth is brilliant for covering banks and slopes, helping stop soil washing away whilst looking neat and tidy. In rockeries, it flows nicely over walls or tucks in between stones, bringing a soft, natural feel. It also works as ground cover beneath trees or bigger shrubs, keeping weeds down and tying plantings together.

Whilst the flowers aren’t much to look at, ‘Repanda’ can grow small blue-black berries that birds enjoy. The thick growth gives good shelter for small wildlife too, helping your garden support more creatures.

‘Repanda’ copes really well with city conditions. It puts up with air pollution and grows happily in town gardens where other plants might find it tough. This hardiness, along with its low profile, makes it a smart pick for green roofs or other tricky urban spots.
