Holger Flaky Juniper Juniperus squamata ‘Holger’ is an eye-catching evergreen shrub that adds distinctive colour to gardens throughout the year. What makes this cultivar special is its two-toned foliage – fresh growth appears in bright creamy-yellow whilst older needles display blue-green tones. This natural colour contrast is most vivid during spring and early summer, though it provides visual appeal all year round.
This variety grows in a low, spreading fashion, reaching 0.5-1 metre tall and spreading 1.5-2 metres wide at maturity. The slightly arching branches create a soft, flowing shape that works brilliantly as ground cover, cascading over walls, or featured in rockeries. Its spreading nature helps it blend harsh garden edges whilst providing excellent coverage.
‘Holger’ performs best in full sun where its colour contrast really shines, though it copes well in partial shade too. Once settled, it handles drought conditions and poor soils with ease, making it perfect for tricky spots that need little fuss. The dense growth also helps prevent soil erosion on slopes. Whether planted alone as a specimen, used in groups for ground cover, or mixed with other conifers, this juniper gives gardeners a tough, attractive plant that maintains structure and colour year-round, bringing golden highlights even during winter months.
Cultural Requirements
Junipers, in general, are quite hardy and can tolerate a range of soil conditions, though they prefer well-drained soils. ‘Holger’ would likely thrive best in full sun to bring out its blue hue, but it’s also adaptable to partial shade. Regular watering during its initial years will benefit its growth, but mature plants are relatively drought-tolerant.
Maintenance
Junipers are relatively low maintenance. They may need occasional pruning if a specific shape or size is desired, but ‘Holger’, with its natural upright form, often requires minimal intervention.
Hardiness
Juniperus squamata and its cultivars are generally hardy, able to withstand cold temperatures – down to -20C and a variety of environmental conditions.
