The Flaky Juniper ‘Tropical Blue’ – Juniperus squamata ‘Tropical Blue’ is a beautiful evergreen conifer that brings vibrant colour to gardens. This slow-growing plant develops a neat, upright form, perfect for compact gardens or creating a striking feature in bigger spaces. The blue-green needles give it that tropical appearance, which works brilliantly even in our cooler climate.
‘Tropical Blue’ works well in rock gardens, mixed planting schemes, or simply planted on its own as a specimen. Its manageable size won’t dominate your space, and being evergreen means it looks good all year round. This juniper really stands out when you pair it with plants that have different coloured leaves.
Flaky Juniper originates from the Himalayas and arrived in Western gardens during the 1800s. The ‘Tropical Blue’ variety came later and has become popular for its bright colour and practical garden size.
This juniper is tough and flexible, doing well in British gardens. It fights off most pests and diseases naturally, so it doesn’t need much fussing over. The thick foliage gives shelter to small birds and insects, helping your garden support more wildlife.
With age, ‘Tropical Blue’ grows into a lovely cone shape that gives your garden good structure. Its steady growth means it keeps its tidy appearance for years without needing much trimming.
Flaky Juniper ‘Tropical Blue’ is easy to care for. Plant it in well-drained soil in a sunny position. It tolerates a range of soil types but prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can shape it lightly in late winter if desired. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. This juniper is generally pest and disease-resistant, making it a great choice for gardeners of all skill levels.
