Blue Star flaky juniper Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Star’ is a charming dwarf evergreen shrub that adds brilliant colour to gardens year-round. This compact cultivar grows slowly and features gorgeous silvery-blue foliage that keeps its vivid hue through all seasons, making it a standout feature whatever the weather. ‘Blue Star’ naturally develops into a neat, dense mound, which makes it perfect for smaller gardens, rockeries, and pots.
The short, spiky needles grow in tight clusters, giving the plant an interesting texture that looks a bit like a sea urchin or sparkling star – that’s where the name comes from. This juniper keeps its lovely shape without much fuss, naturally growing into a balanced, slightly flattened dome. Once it’s settled in, it’s quite tough and handles dry spells well, so it’s great for gardeners who want something beautiful but not demanding.
The silvery-blue colour works brilliantly in garden schemes, especially when you put it next to plants with golden or dark green leaves for contrast. You can use it as a single feature plant in a rockery, plant several together as ground cover, or pop it in mixed containers. Blue Star flaky juniper Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Star’ gives gardeners a robust, eye-catching plant that provides structure and colour all year long. Its neat size and lovely appearance suit both traditional and modern gardens perfectly.
Cultural Requirements
Junipers, in general, are quite hardy and can tolerate a range of soil conditions, though they prefer well-drained soils. ‘Blue Star’ would likely thrive best in full sun to bring out its blue hue, but it’s also adaptable to partial shade. Regular watering during its initial years will benefit its growth, but mature plants are relatively drought-tolerant.
Maintenance
Junipers are relatively low maintenance. They may need occasional pruning if a specific shape or size is desired, but ‘Blue Star’, with its natural upright form, often requires minimal intervention.
Hardiness
Juniperus squamata and its cultivars are generally hardy, able to withstand cold temperatures – down to -20C and a variety of environmental conditions.
