The European Larch Larix decidua offers wonderful seasonal interest to gardens. This graceful conifer is unusual as it sheds its needles each winter, but first treats you to a stunning autumn display of brilliant golden-yellow foliage. Come spring, delicate lime-green needles appear with a soft, feathery texture that creates an airy appearance.

Pretty pink-purple cones emerge in spring, standing proud on the branches like miniature roses. They turn brown as they mature and stay attractive through the bare winter months. The characteristic layered branching forms a natural pyramid with a straight main trunk.

With age, the bark develops lovely texture, becoming deeply grooved with rich brown colouring. Birds enjoy nesting amongst its branches, and the bare winter outline reveals the tree’s elegant structure against the sky.

Whilst it’s quite a fast grower, the Larch maintains a delicate, refined appearance that won’t dominate your garden. Every season offers something new – spring’s tender growth, summer’s soft green canopy, autumn’s golden transformation and winter’s striking silhouette.

Plant your Larch in full sun or light shade in any well-drained soil. It’s very hardy and copes well with cold but prefers not to sit in wet ground. Once established, it needs little attention beyond removing any dead wood in late winter. The tree naturally sheds its needles in autumn – this is normal and creates good mulch beneath.
