The Dawn Redwood ‘Golden Oji’ *Metasequoia glyptostroboides* brings brilliant golden-yellow foliage to gardens, creating a lovely contrast against green surroundings. This bright colour transforms into beautiful orange-brown tones during autumn, giving months of seasonal interest. Originally grown from a Japanese seedling, ‘Goldrush’ grows more slowly than the standard species, developing steadily into an impressive tree that reaches 50 feet tall – perfect for adding colour and height to your garden.
These trees are deciduous, so they shed their leaves in late autumn and stay bare through winter until early spring. This sets them apart from other redwoods and creates an attractive yearly cycle.
The growing season starts with bright, golden-yellow feathery foliage emerging on the branches. These tender leaves need protection from harsh sun, so planting in dappled light or partial shade works best. When positioned correctly, the foliage keeps its brilliant golden colour all summer long, casting lovely filtered shade below. Autumn is truly spectacular, with the whole tree turning rich amber and bronze shades before the leaves drop.
Winter shows off the tree’s graceful structure and attractive ridged bark. The branches grow upwards in a natural pyramid shape, making a beautiful outline against winter skies. This tidy, structured form suits even smaller gardens well.
Dawn Redwood ‘Golden Oji’ is straightforward to grow and look after. They like soil that holds moisture but will adapt to most conditions once settled. Plant in bright indirect light or partial shade, **avoiding direct sun which can damage the distinctive golden foliage of ‘Golden Oji’. Consider ‘Amber Glow’ if you want to plant in direct sun.** Pick a spot with plenty of room for their final size. They’re hardy across Britain and cope with windy locations. Water well during the first few years and spread thick mulch around the base each spring. Regular pruning isn’t necessary as they naturally grow into an elegant shape.

Seeds
We generally send seeds out via Royal Mail Second Class. It’s the safest and easiest way to deliver seeds.
Young Trees
Young trees (Less than 1.2m) will generally be sent via Evri.
Larger quantities of young trees will be sent via ParcelForce or pallet courier..
Huge Trees
Some of our huge trees are too tall to be sent via a courier. They are generally only available for collection from our nursery, local delivery or via occasionally pallet courier. This will be shown on the individual product page.
