The Dawn Redwood Metasequoia glyptostroboides ‘Golden Oji’ or ‘Goldrush’ brings brilliant golden-yellow foliage to gardens, creating a sunny focal point throughout the growing season. This bright colouring makes a lovely contrast against darker green plants nearby, then shifts to warm orange-brown shades in autumn for an extended show of colour. Originally grown from a Japanese seedling, ‘Goldrush’ grows more slowly than the standard species, developing steadily into an impressive tree that can grow to 50 feet tall – perfect for adding both colour and height to your garden.
These trees are deciduous, so they shed their leaves in late autumn and stay bare through winter until early spring. This sets them apart from other redwoods but gives you a lovely changing display all year round.
The year starts with bright, golden-yellow feathery foliage emerging on the branches. These soft leaves need protection from harsh sun to prevent burning, so a spot with filtered light or partial shade works best. When positioned correctly, the golden colour stays vibrant through summer whilst providing lovely dappled shade underneath. Autumn is when things get really special, as the whole tree lights up in gorgeous amber and bronze colours before the leaves drop.
Winter shows off another side of this tree’s beauty, revealing its graceful structure and attractive fluted bark. The upward-sweeping branches form a natural pyramid shape that looks stunning against winter skies. This tidy, structured growth makes it suitable for smaller gardens too.
Dawn Redwood ‘Golden Oji’ is straightforward to grow and look after. They like soil that holds moisture well but will handle most conditions once they’re settled in. Plant in bright indirect light or partial shade, avoiding direct sun which can damage the distinctive golden foliage of ‘Golden Oji’. Consider ‘Amber Glow’ if you want to plant in direct sun. Pick a spot with room for their final size. They’re tough enough for anywhere in Britain and don’t mind windy spots. Water well for the first few years and spread thick mulch around the base each spring. Regular pruning isn’t needed as they naturally grow into a beautiful shape.

Seeds
We generally send seeds out via Royal Mail Second Class. It’s the safest and easiest way to deliver seeds.
Young Trees
Young trees (Less than 1.2m) will generally be sent via Evri.
Larger quantities of young trees will be sent via ParcelForce or pallet courier..
Huge Trees
Some of our huge trees are too tall to be sent via a courier. They are generally only available for collection from our nursery, local delivery or via occasionally pallet courier. This will be shown on the individual product page.
