The Dawn Redwood Metasequoia glyptostroboides ‘Golden Oji’ or ‘Goldrush’ creates a brilliant focal point in gardens with its bright golden-yellow leaves that truly shine throughout the growing season. The vibrant foliage offers wonderful contrast against surrounding green plants and transforms into beautiful orange-brown shades in autumn, giving months of colour interest. This cultivar began as a Japanese seedling and grows more slowly than the standard species, developing steadily into an impressive tree that can reach 50 feet tall – perfect for adding both colour and height to your garden.
These trees are deciduous, shedding their leaves in late autumn and staying bare through winter until early spring. This sets them apart from other redwood varieties, but creates a fantastic year-round display.
The growing season starts with bright, golden-yellow feathery foliage emerging along the branches. These tender leaves need protection from harsh sun, so planting in dappled light or partial shade works best. The leaves keep their brilliant golden colour through summer when given the right conditions, casting lovely filtered shade below. Autumn is when the real magic happens, as the whole tree lights up in warm amber and bronze colours before leaf drop.
Winter shows off another side of this tree’s beauty, revealing its graceful form and attractive grooved bark. The upward-sweeping branches create a natural pyramid shape that looks stunning against winter skies. This tidy, structured growth habit makes it suitable for smaller gardens too.
Dawn Redwood ‘Golden Oji’ is easy to grow and maintain. They prefer moisture-retentive soil but will cope with most conditions once established. Plant in bright indirect light or partial shade, avoiding direct sun which can damage the distinctive golden foliage of ‘Golden Oji’. Consider ‘Amber Glow’ if you want to plant in direct sun. Choose a spot with enough space for their eventual height. They’re hardy throughout Britain and don’t mind exposed sites. Water regularly in the first few years and add a thick mulch around the base each spring. No regular pruning is needed as they naturally form an elegant shape.
