The Dawn Redwood adds prehistoric charm to gardens. While it appears evergreen, this fascinating tree is deciduous, producing stunning copper and golden hues in autumn before shedding its delicate, needle-like foliage.

Come spring, vibrant green leaves appear, forming an open, graceful canopy. This tree grows at a good pace, naturally developing a tidy conical form that requires no pruning. The trunk displays attractive reddish-brown bark that strips away, providing visual appeal during winter when branches are leafless.

While it can reach considerable heights eventually, it takes decades to achieve full size. In most gardens, it remains a manageable medium-sized specimen for many years. Its compact, upright growth habit means it won’t spread widely, making it ideal for tighter spaces.

This species was believed extinct until the 1940s when discovered growing wild in China. Today it makes an excellent garden specimen, bringing ancient history into contemporary settings. The delicate, fern-like leaves flutter beautifully in summer winds, creating dappled shade below.

Plant your Dawn Redwood in any reasonable garden soil where it gets plenty of sun or light shade. Though it likes moisture, it grows well in most spots once settled in. Water regularly in the first growing season to help establish a good root system. After that, it needs little attention beyond removing any dead wood in late winter. A yearly mulch keeps it happy, and it rarely suffers from pests or diseases in our climate.
