The Dawn Redwood Metasequoia glyptostroboides has one of the most captivating stories in the plant world. This ancient tree was believed to be completely extinct, existing only as fossils, until botanists made an incredible discovery in 1944 when they found living specimens in a remote Chinese valley. This find amazed scientists worldwide and changed everything we knew about this prehistoric species. The tree remains endangered in the wild according to the IUCN, despite being successfully grown in gardens globally since its rediscovery.

This fast-growing deciduous conifer can reach impressive heights of 25-40 metres when mature, creating a magnificent focal point in any garden. The tree develops a classic pyramid shape with a strong central trunk and horizontal branches that curve elegantly upwards at the ends. Its soft, feathery foliage grows in opposite pairs and starts lime-green in spring, deepening through summer before turning lovely russet-brown shades in autumn. When the leaves drop, they reveal the tree’s attractive ridged bark, and come spring, fresh bright green growth appears again.

The Dawn Redwood adapts well to different growing conditions despite its ancient heritage, handling various soil types and coping with both moist and drier conditions once it’s settled in. Its incredible backstory, lovely appearance, and vigorous growth make it highly sought after for gardens, parks, and tree collections throughout Britain, giving gardeners the chance to grow their own piece of living history.

This remarkable tree serves as both a stunning garden specimen and a testament to nature’s ability to surprise us with extraordinary discoveries.

Plant your Dawn Redwood in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. It prefers slightly acidic conditions but is adaptable. Water regularly during the first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s relatively drought-tolerant but appreciates consistent moisture. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches, as the tree naturally maintains its pyramidal shape. This fast-growing tree is generally pest and disease-resistant, making it a low-maintenance choice for UK gardens.
