Alberta spruce ‘Sander’s Blue’ – Picea glauca ‘Sander’s Blue’ is a lovely dwarf conifer that brings cool blue tones to gardens. This small evergreen catches the eye with its beautiful blue-green needles that hold their colour all year. It naturally grows into a tidy, cone-shaped form with little effort, perfect for gardeners wanting easy-care plants.

This slow-growing tree reaches roughly 2-3 metres after 10 years, spreading to about 1 metre wide, making it brilliant for smaller gardens, rock gardens, or as a standout feature in beds. Its thick growth also makes it useful for natural screening or shelter in windy spots.

The short, rigid needles spiral around each branch, giving the tree a dense, full appearance throughout the seasons. New spring growth appears in lighter, almost silver-blue shades, creating beautiful contrast against the older foliage.

‘Sander’s Blue’ does well in full sun to light shade and handles cold British winters without trouble. It’s also deer-resistant, which helps in countryside gardens. Its small size and steady growth make it excellent for pots on patios or balconies too.

This tree brings structure and all-season appeal to any garden. Its cool blue-green shade works brilliantly with other plants, helping nearby blooms and leaves stand out more. Whether you’re after evergreen colour, want an easy-care feature plant, or fancy adding a touch of alpine charm to your plot, Alberta spruce ‘Sander’s Blue’ is a flexible and appealing option.

Alberta spruce ‘Sander’s Blue’ is fairly easy to care for, making it suitable for gardeners of all levels. Plant it in well-drained, slightly acidic soil in a spot that gets full sun to partial shade. While it prefers consistent moisture, established plants can handle short dry spells. Water deeply during dry periods, especially in its first few growing seasons. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep it away from the trunk to prevent rot. ‘Sander’s Blue’ doesn’t need regular pruning to maintain its shape, but you can lightly trim it in late winter or early spring if desired. Feed with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth.
