The Serbian Spruce Picea omorika stands out as one of the most beautiful and refined conifers you can grow. This tall, slender tree naturally forms a narrow, almost column-like shape with gracefully drooping branches that curve upward at the ends. The foliage is really special – dark green on top with bright silvery-white stripes beneath, giving a gorgeous two-toned look as the wind catches the branches.

This tree might look delicate, but it’s actually very hardy and easy-going. It grows in a lovely, even shape that stays neat without any need for regular trimming. The slim profile works brilliantly in smaller gardens where you want height but don’t have much room to spare, while still giving you structure and colour all year round.

This spruce comes from the Drina River Valley in Serbia and Bosnia, and it’s become really popular with British gardeners. Its tall, narrow growth creates a fantastic upright feature without blocking too much light. Come winter, you’ll spot small purple cones forming near the top, which adds a nice seasonal touch.

Plant your Serbian Spruce in any decent soil that drains well. It’s happy in full sun or light shade and handles city pollution without any problems. Young trees need regular watering while they settle in, but once established they cope quite well with dry spells. No regular pruning is needed – the tree naturally maintains its elegant shape. Apply a mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. This spruce appreciates shelter from strong winds to maintain its graceful form.
