The Oriental Spruce Picea orientalis is a stunning evergreen that adds sophisticated charm to gardens. This attractive tree is known for its remarkably small, shiny dark green needles that are much shorter than those found on other spruces. These compact needles create an exceptionally dense and polished look, providing rich, deep green colour all year round.
This tree has a slow growth habit, forming a tidy pyramid shape with elegantly layered branches that curve gently upwards at the ends. Younger specimens are especially compact and orderly, making them excellent options for more limited spaces. With age, they maintain their appealing cone-like outline without spreading too widely.
During spring, the fresh bright green shoots create a lovely contrast against the older, darker needles. Small reddish-brown cones develop near the top of the tree, slowly changing to brown as they ripen. The result is understated elegance, ideal for gardens seeking a more polished appearance.
Oriental Spruce does well in most free-draining soils and prefers a protected position away from strong winds. It flourishes in full sun or partial shade and handles typical garden conditions without trouble. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a good root system. Once established, it’s quite drought tolerant. There’s no need for regular pruning as it naturally maintains its shape. A spring mulch helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
