Chinese White Pine Pinus armandii is quite uncommon in Britain but this medium-sized evergreen adapts well to our conditions. You can plant it as a feature tree in gardens or grow it as bonsai. Coming from the mountainous regions of southwestern China, this tough species copes with different conditions and altitudes. Its resilient nature means it can thrive in various gardens.

The tree produces drooping blue-green needles, reaching up to 15cm in length, which grow in clusters of five from an early age.

Chinese White Pine Pinus armandii is a medium to large conifer that usually grows between 20 to 50 metres tall (66 to 164 feet). It forms a cone-shaped or upright outline with a straight main stem and thick, wide-spreading branches.

The foliage consists of slender needles bundled together in groups of five. These are thin, dark green, and typically measure around 10 to 15 centimetres (4 to 6 inches) long.

This pine produces fairly large cones, spanning 10 to 20 centimetres (4 to 8 inches) in length. They’re cylinder-shaped and often show purple tints whilst young. When fully developed, the cones become brown and shed their seeds.

Armand pine grows best in free-draining, acidic soil and naturally occurs in mixed woodland alongside other conifers and deciduous trees.

Tough enough for most areas across Britain, even during harsh winters (-15C to -10C)
