The Lacebark Pine Pinus bungeana is an absolute stunner that’ll catch anyone’s eye in the garden. This evergreen gem is celebrated for its remarkable bark that flakes off in sections, showing off a brilliant mosaic of green, white, and purple hues – rather like nature’s very own camouflage design. It’s a slow grower, reaching around 10-20 metres in height, so think of it as a patient gardener’s reward rather than an instant result. When it’s young, you’ll see a neat pyramid shape, but give it time and it’ll spread out into a lovely open-crowned specimen.

The bright green needles grow in groups of three, keeping the tree looking fresh and lively throughout the year. Come springtime, you’ll notice little purple cones appearing, and these gradually turn light brown over a year or two. These cones are quite petite for a pine, typically measuring around 5-7 cm in length.

This pine really gets people talking in gardens. That distinctive bark makes it brilliant as a feature tree, ideal for making a statement in bigger spaces. Wildlife loves it too, with birds and small creatures finding good shelter among its branches. Back in its homeland of China, it represents long life and you’ll often see it growing around temples and traditional gardens.

Give your Lacebark Pine a sunny position with soil that drains well. It’s not particularly fussy about what type of soil you’ve got, but it won’t thank you for waterlogged conditions. Once it’s settled in, it handles dry spells quite well. You won’t need to prune it much unless you’re trying to achieve a specific look. It’s pretty tough against pests and diseases, though it’s worth watching for needle blight or bark beetles. Pop some mulch around the base to help keep moisture in and weeds out.
