The Stone Pine – Pinus pinea, is a striking evergreen tree known for its umbrella-like canopy and edible pine nuts. Growing to 15-25 metres tall, it features long needles, thick reddish-brown bark, and large cones. Well-suited to coastal and Mediterranean-style gardens, it’s drought-tolerant and makes an excellent specimen tree in milder UK regions. This slow-growing pine offers year-round interest and a taste of the Mediterranean.

The Stone Pine Pinus pinea is a lovely Mediterranean beauty that brings a taste of southern Europe to your garden. This evergreen grows at a leisurely pace, ultimately reaching 15-25 metres tall and developing that classic umbrella-like crown. The bark becomes quite striking with age, turning a gorgeous reddish-brown colour with deep furrows. Those long needles, measuring 10-20 cm, grow in pairs and form a dense, dark green crown that looks wonderful year-round.

The cones are proper show-offs – large oval shapes that need three years to fully mature. They hold those prized pine nuts that are so popular in cooking. Mind you, patience is needed as these trees won’t start producing cones until they’re around 20 years old, the cheeky things. They’re tough customers once established, coping well with coastal winds and dry conditions. In Britain, they do best in the warmer southern areas, where they make a brilliant focal point in large gardens or public spaces.
