The Stone Pine *Pinus pinea*, commonly called the Umbrella Pine or Italian Stone Pine, is a striking evergreen that brings Mediterranean charm to gardens. This slow-growing pine reaches 15-25 metres tall and develops its famous umbrella-shaped crown with age. The bark becomes thick and deeply grooved, showing attractive reddish-brown colours that enhance its ornamental appeal. Long needles of 10-20 cm grow in pairs, forming a thick, dark green canopy that offers wonderful shade.

A standout feature of the Stone Pine is its large, egg-shaped cones that need up to three years to ripen. These cones hold edible pine nuts that are highly valued in Mediterranean cooking. The tree won’t start producing cones until around 20 years old, so it’s definitely a long-term project if you’re hoping to harvest nuts. In Mediterranean regions, these pines are commonly grown in commercial orchards for nut crops.

This pine handles coastal conditions brilliantly, coping well with salt spray and strong winds, which makes it perfect for seaside gardens. It’s also remarkably drought-resistant once settled in, loving hot, dry summers. For gardens here, it works best in warmer areas, especially southern regions, where it creates an impressive focal point in larger gardens or parks.

Give your Stone Pine full sun and free-draining soil. It likes sandy or stony ground and won’t tolerate soggy conditions. Once settled, it needs very little watering and handles drought well. You won’t need to prune it much, just remove any dead or broken branches. Remember this tree needs lots of room to develop its full, classic shape. In cooler parts of the country, it might need shelter from cold winter winds, particularly when young.
