A swiftly growing evergreen coniferous tree, capable of attaining a height of 30 meters (100 feet). In its youth, the bark displays a smooth texture and a grey-brown hue, but as it ages, it develops vertical fissures and a scaly appearance. This tree assumes a broadly conical canopy, with needles typically arranged in pairs, occasionally in groups of three, at the tips of its branches. These needles can reach lengths of up to 30 centimetres (12 inches) and drape gracefully from the tree, sporting a pale green hue.

Yunnan Pine Pinus yunnanensis is a stunning evergreen conifer from southwestern China. This remarkable tree features a tall, straight stem and develops a characteristic flat-topped or umbrella-like crown as it matures. The long, slim needles grow in groups of three, forming a thick canopy of rich green foliage.
In gardens, it grows to 20-30 metres tall over time, creating an impressive specimen tree for larger spaces. The bark is chunky and deeply grooved, varying from dark grey to reddish-brown tones, providing year-round visual appeal. During spring, small male cones appear alongside larger female cones, which take two years to ripen into woody, oval-shaped structures.
Pinus yunnanensis offers both decorative appeal and practical benefits through its ability to adapt to different soil conditions and drought tolerance once settled. This pine brings the essence of Chinese mountainsides to gardens, providing constant structure and distinctive architectural form. Its hardy character and appealing shape make it perfect for creating feature points in parks, spacious gardens, or within mixed conifer displays.
Pinus yunnanensis is relatively low-maintenance once established. It prefers full sun exposure and thrives in well-drained soils, though it can adapt to a variety of soil types, including poor and rocky soils. Young trees benefit from regular watering during their first few growing seasons, but mature trees are quite drought-tolerant. Pruning is generally not necessary unless you’re removing dead or damaged branches. If shaping is desired, do so in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. This pine is generally resistant to pests and diseases, but keep an eye out for common pine issues such as needle blight or bark beetles. Fertilisation is usually not required unless the soil is particularly poor. When planting, consider the tree’s eventual size and provide ample space for growth.
Protect young trees from strong winds until they’re well-established. With proper care, Yunna Pines can be a long-lived, impressive feature in your garden.
