Our Redwood Seeds Collection gives you the chance to grow three of the world’s most impressive tree species: Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens*, Giant Sequoia *Sequoiadendron giganteum*, and Dawn Redwood *Metasequoia glyptostroboides*.

Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* is known for reaching incredible heights and living for centuries. This evergreen comes from the misty coastal areas of California and grows best in moist, well-draining soil. Its tall form and reddish bark create a striking feature in any garden.

Giant Sequoia *Sequoiadendron giganteum* stands out for its enormous trunk width. This mountain species from the Sierra Nevada enjoys sunny spots with deep, rich soil. Growing these seeds brings the majesty of the American West mountains into your garden.

Dawn Redwood *Metasequoia glyptostroboides* is a deciduous conifer with a fascinating past. Scientists thought it was extinct and knew it only from fossils until they found living trees in China. Its needle-like leaves create beautiful copper colours in autumn.

This collection lets gardeners grow the varied Redwood family. Each species has its own special traits that create an impressive green space. Whether you want them for conservation, learning, or simply their beauty, these seeds let you grow living landmarks.

Growing these seeds brings amazing beauty to your garden and links you to ancient natural wonders. With the right care, each tree develops its own character, adding to a varied and healthy garden ecosystem.

**Bonsai Suitable?:** Yes. There is no such thing as *”Bonsai seeds”*. It’s just marketing. Seeds are seeds. There are occasionally strains of some seeds taken from small trees that grow slower and smaller, however Redwood trees do not flower and produce seed under bonsai conditions. Redwoods generally only flower and seed in the wild at about 250 years old.

Giant Redwood Seeds

Natural Germination: Giant Redwood seeds typically germinate following fire, which clears the ground and exposes the soil to sun, aiding in germination. In a garden setting, mimic these conditions by sowing the seeds in a well-draining, sunny spot, preferably in early spring.

Artificial Stratification: For artificial germination, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, then mix them with moist sand and store them in a refrigerator for 15-30 days. This process mimics the cold, moist conditions of winter. After stratification, plant the seeds in a light, well-draining soil mix, and maintain a consistent temperature of 18-22ยฐC.

Coast Redwood Seeds

Natural Germination: Coast Redwood seeds typically require exposure to light for germination. In their natural habitat, these seeds germinate following disturbances such as fire that create open, well-lit conditions. Plant the seeds shallowly in a location with ample sunlight, ideally in moist, well-drained soil.

Artificial Stratification: For artificial germination, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat. Then, place them on a moist paper towel, seal in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for about 30 days. This simulates the natural cold, moist conditions of winter. After stratification, sow the seeds on the surface of a well-draining soil mix and keep them at a temperature of 18-22ยฐC, ensuring they receive plenty of light.

Dawn Redwood Seeds

Natural Germination: Dawn Redwood seeds require a period of cold stratification to germinate, mimicking the winter conditions. Plant the seeds in a moist, well-drained soil mix and expose them to winter temperatures outdoors, or keep them in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse.

Artificial Stratification: For artificial germination, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, then place them in moist sand or a damp paper towel. Seal them in a plastic bag and refrigerate for 60-90 days to simulate winter conditions. After stratification, sow the seeds on the surface of a well-draining soil mix and maintain a temperature of 18-22ยฐC with adequate lighting.
