Japanese Umbrella Pine Sciadopitys verticillata stands out as a remarkable and graceful conifer. Despite its name, it’s not truly a pine but rather a living fossil without any close relatives.
This tree grows slowly and is valued for its striking looks. The dark green needles form circular clusters that look like umbrella spokes. This characteristic gives the tree its popular name.
When young, Japanese Umbrella Pine grows in a cone shape. Over time, it becomes more open and less regular. In gardens, it typically grows 20-30 feet tall, though it can reach much greater heights in its home country of Japan.
The reddish-brown bark strips away in thin pieces, creating visual appeal in winter. Small cones develop in spring, adding to its decorative qualities.
This conifer works brilliantly as an eye-catching centrepiece in gardens. Its uncommon shape and texture make lovely contrasts with surrounding plants. It suits Japanese-themed gardens perfectly or works well as a standalone feature tree.
Caring for Sciadopitys verticillata is straightforward, but it requires patience due to its slow growth. Plant it in a spot with full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Water regularly during its first few years to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s moderately drought-tolerant but appreciates consistent moisture. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning is generally not necessary. If needed, do it in late winter or early spring. Feed annually in spring with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser. Japanese Umbrella Pine is generally pest and disease resistant. However, keep an eye out for spider mites in dry conditions. This tree benefits from protection from strong winds, especially in colder regions.
