Sowing Instructions

You can sow these seeds throughout the year. Combine equal amounts of seed compost with vermiculite, perlite or horticultural grit and place seeds on the surface, then lightly cover with compost, vermiculite or perlite. Pop them in a polythene bag, seal it up and put in the fridge for 4 weeks. Afterwards, transfer to a propagator or warm spot and keep at 18-21C. Seeds should germinate within 1-2 months. Germination happens at different times, so sow sparingly and transplant seedlings when they’re big enough to handle without disturbing the surrounding compost too much.

You could also sow in pots using the method above from late summer through early winter, then put them in a cold frame and let the changing seasons do the work – seedlings will pop up the following spring.

Growing Instructions

Thrives in reasonably fertile, moist but well-draining soil in full sun or dappled shade. Keep young plants under glass through their first winter. Don’t give seedlings too much water. After 18 months, the trees can stay outside year-round. Move to bigger pots when needed. Plant in the ground once they outgrow their containers. Pick your spot wisely – these trees grow massive.

We germinate and grow these very seeds for our Redwood nursery.

Our seeds are always sourced fairly and ethically.

Natural Germination: Coast Redwood seeds typically require exposure to light for germination. In their natural habitat, these seeds germinate following disturbances such as fire that create open, well-lit conditions. Plant the seeds shallowly in a location with ample sunlight, ideally in moist, well-drained soil.

Artificial Stratification: For artificial germination, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat. Optionally, place them on a moist paper towel, seal in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for about 30 days. This simulates the natural cold, moist conditions of winter, however this isn’t required. After stratification, sow the seeds on the surface of a well-draining soil mix and keep them at a temperature of 18-22°C, ensuring they receive plenty of light.
