Sowing Instructions
You can sow these seeds any time throughout the year. Combine equal amounts of seed compost with vermiculite, perlite or horticultural grit and place seeds on the surface, then lightly cover with a thin layer of compost, vermiculite or perlite. Pop them in a polythene bag and put in the fridge for 4 weeks. Move to a propagator or warm spot afterwards and keep at 18-21C. Seeds should germinate within 1-2 months. Germination can be patchy, so sow seeds thinly and carefully lift seedlings when they’re big enough to handle without disturbing the remaining compost too much.
You could also sow in pots using the method above from late summer through early winter, then put them in a cold frame and let the natural seasonal changes do the work with seedlings appearing the following spring.
Growing Instructions
These prefer reasonably fertile, moist well-draining soil in full sun to light shade. Keep young plants under glass through their first winter. Don’t give seedlings too much water. At 18 months old, the trees can go outside in any weather. Move to bigger pots when needed. Plant in the ground once they’re too big for containers. Pick your spot wisely – these trees grow very large.
We germinate and grow these very seeds ourselves for our Redwood nursery.
Our seeds are always sourced fairly and ethically.
Natural Germination: Coast Redwood seeds typically require exposure to light for germination. In their natural habitat, these seeds germinate following disturbances such as fire that create open, well-lit conditions. Plant the seeds shallowly in a location with ample sunlight, ideally in moist, well-drained soil.
Artificial Stratification: For artificial germination, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat. Optionally, place them on a moist paper towel, seal in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for about 30 days. This simulates the natural cold, moist conditions of winter, however this isn’t required. After stratification, sow the seeds on the surface of a well-draining soil mix and keep them at a temperature of 18-22°C, ensuring they receive plenty of light.
