Lightning Coast Redwood, a stunning new variety of Sequoia sempervirens, adds a brilliant spark to gardens through its eye-catching pale yellow-tipped needles. This exceptional tree puts a modern spin on the traditional Coast Redwood, blending the species’ impressive growing potential with an unusual colour scheme that makes it stand out among conifers.

What makes ‘Lightning’ special is its foliage. The vivid, pale yellow tips form a beautiful contrast with the darker green needles beneath, creating an almost glowing effect, as though lightning has struck the tree. This colour variation brings texture and visual appeal to the tree’s appearance, turning it into a garden centrepiece.

‘Lightning’ differs from standard Coast Redwoods with its more densely packed leaves. This compact growing pattern creates a fuller, more structured look, boosting its decorative appeal. The denser foliage may also offer better wind resistance, which suits gardens well.

Being a fairly recent variety, ‘Lightning’ gives gardeners the opportunity to stay ahead of gardening fashion. It’s perfect for collectors and keen gardeners wanting to introduce something genuinely distinctive to their conifer selection. In bigger gardens, it works wonderfully as a showstopping specimen tree, whilst in smaller spaces, it can be grown in pots or used as a manageable feature during its younger years.

Though it won’t grow as tall as its wild relatives in California’s forests, ‘Lightning’ can still develop into a sizeable tree given time. Its slower growth in our climate can actually be helpful for those who want to appreciate its special features for longer whilst keeping it at a workable size.

The pale yellow tips of ‘Lightning’ bring much-needed brightness to shadier garden spots, appearing to shine even in dim conditions. This quality proves especially useful in gardens, where it can provide a touch of light during grey days.
