Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* seeds come from the misty coastal areas of Northern California, where they flourish in damp, humid conditions. These magnificent trees aren’t simply garden plants; they’re forest giants that support entire ecosystems in their towering crowns. Growing Coast Redwood seeds gives you the chance to watch one of nature’s most impressive and hardy species develop.

The trees develop thick, fibrous bark as they mature, which shields them from fire damage and pests. Their needle-shaped foliage creates lush, dense crowns that provide shelter for many types of wildlife. Starting these seeds means making a promise to the future – you’re growing something that will become a remarkable natural heritage in your garden.

Coast Redwoods are far more than ordinary trees; they’re living monuments to the past. Many examples have stood for over 2,000 years, quietly observing centuries of history unfold. When you plant *Sequoia sempervirens* seeds, you’re doing more than growing a tree; you’re building a link to the ancient natural world.

Natural Germination: Coast Redwood seeds typically require exposure to light for germination. In their natural habitat, these seeds germinate following disturbances such as fire that create open, well-lit conditions. Plant the seeds shallowly in a location with ample sunlight, ideally in moist, well-drained soil.

Artificial Stratification: For artificial germination, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat. Optionally, place them on a moist paper towel, seal in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for about 30 days. This simulates the natural cold, moist conditions of winter, however this isn’t required. After stratification, sow the seeds on the surface of a well-draining soil mix and keep them at a temperature of 18-22ยฐC, ensuring they receive plenty of light.
