The Coast Redwood ‘Silver Ghost’ – *Sequoia sempervirens* cultivar – is a remarkable evergreen that adds drama to any garden with its distinctive pale, silvery bark that gives it an almost ethereal appearance.
Though smaller than the giant specimens found in California’s forests, ‘Silver Ghost’ still reaches an impressive 20-25 metres in height. Young trees show a neat conical shape that becomes more upright and columnar with age. The soft needles grow in flat, feathery sprays, creating an elegant texture that contrasts beautifully with the tree’s bold stature.
What makes ‘Silver Ghost’ particularly special is its all-season appeal. The striking pale bark against dark green foliage looks magnificent throughout the year, providing colour and structure even in the depths of winter when deciduous trees are dormant.
This redwood works brilliantly as a statement tree where you need impact and presence. Its distinctive appearance and tall, elegant form naturally draw attention, whilst adding valuable height to garden schemes.
Growing at a decent pace for a conifer, ‘Silver Ghost’ gives relatively quick results compared to many large evergreens. It adapts well to various soil conditions, though it performs best with consistent moisture and good drainage.
Young trees can spend their first few years in large pots, making this variety suitable for smaller spaces initially. Eventually though, it needs room to spread its roots and achieve full size.
Coast Redwood ‘Silver Ghost’ prefers a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate a range of soil types. Water regularly during dry spells, especially when the tree is young. Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter if needed. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Keep an eye out for pests like aphids, but generally, these trees are quite resistant to problems
