Coast Redwood Sequoia sempervirens stands as one of nature’s most impressive achievements. These specimens at 100/120cm in P9T pots give you the chance to cultivate the planet’s tallest tree species from an early stage. Though currently compact, each plant holds the same genetic blueprint as their towering cousins, including the renowned “Hyperion” that reaches 116 metres (379 feet) in California’s ancient forests.
These trees have earned the RHS Award of Garden Merit and show brilliant adaptability when young. Container growing works well in their early years, perfect for gardeners working with limited space or those planning ahead for future garden development. This flexibility in pot cultivation lets you position them where they’ll thrive and gives you the chance to care for these ancient giants from their formative years.
With Coast Redwoods listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, growing them in gardens plays a valuable role in conservation efforts. In the wild, these trees can survive for more than 2,200 years, forming extensive forests linked by complex root networks that create some of the planet’s most massive living organisms. Your 100/120cm specimen marks the start of this incredible journey.
Young Coast Redwoods grow at an impressive pace, potentially gaining considerable height annually when conditions suit them. They’re also outstanding at capturing carbon, storing more CO2 than any other tree species we know of, making them both stunning garden features and important partners in environmental protection.
Whether you keep them in containers initially or plant them straight into spacious garden areas, these exceptional trees add real botanical grandeur to any space, combining practical growing options with distinguished natural heritage.
Coast Redwood Sequoia sempervirens boasts several outstanding records:
1. Tallest Tree: Coast Redwoods hold the title for Earth’s tallest trees. The current champion is “Hyperion,” reaching roughly 379 feet (116 metres) in height. Future surveys might reveal even taller examples.
2. Largest Living Organism: Coast Redwood forests create one of the planet’s biggest living organisms through their connected root networks, called “clones.” These clones span huge areas and contain genetically matching trees sharing one root system.
3. Oldest Tree: Though not the most ancient species, some Coast Redwoods have survived over 2,200 years, ranking them among Earth’s most enduring trees.
4. Largest Groves: California’s Coast Redwood forests, especially in places like Redwood National and State Parks, contain some of the most spectacular and expansive groves of these magnificent trees, forming breathtaking natural scenes.
5. Fastest Growth Rate: Coast Redwoods show remarkable growth speeds, with young specimens gaining notable height annually. This quick development helps create their impressive stature.
6. Carbon Sequestration: Thanks to their enormous size and lengthy lifespan, Coast Redwoods work as powerful carbon stores, capturing large quantities of carbon dioxide, making them crucial allies against climate change.
7. Sequoia sempervirens holds the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
Position young Sequoia sempervirens in full sun or partial shade. When container-growing, use a large, well-draining pot with quality compost. Regular watering is essential for pot-grown specimens, especially during the growing season. Feed annually with a balanced fertiliser. While hardy once established, young plants benefit from winter protection, particularly in containers.
