Thriving in damp, coastal conditions, the coast redwood makes an excellent choice for gardens and parks. Its breathtaking stature and ancient heritage create a wonderful centrepiece, linking us to the natural world and bringing a peaceful atmosphere. The beauty of Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* offers a glimpse into the grandeur of these prehistoric giants in your garden.
Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* serves as a remarkable link to our planet’s ancient past, bringing nature’s grandest form into any garden setting.
Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* now appears as “Endangered” on the IUCN Red List, showing how desperately conservation action is needed. These incredible giants, which once covered much of western North America’s coast, now face serious dangers from human interference, climate change, wildfires, and disease. Loss of habitat through logging and changing land use has badly affected their numbers. Being among Earth’s tallest and oldest tree species, protecting Coast Redwoods matters not just for their environmental importance but also for keeping the variety of life and strength of their special forest habitats.
Work to protect and restore where they grow is vital to keep this famous species alive for those who come after us.
Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* holds many amazing records:
1. Tallest Tree: Coast Redwoods are famous as Earth’s tallest trees. The present record-holder for the tallest living tree is “Hyperion,” reaching an incredible height of roughly 379 feet (116 metres). Though new finds might reveal even taller examples.
2. Largest Living Thing: Coast Redwood forests create one of the planet’s largest living things through their connected root networks, called “clones.” These clones spread across huge areas and contain genetically matching trees sharing the same root network.
3. Oldest Tree: Though not the oldest species, some individual Coast Redwoods have survived for more than 2,200 years, placing them among Earth’s longest-living trees.
4. Largest Groves: California’s Coast Redwood forests, especially in places like Redwood National and State Parks, contain some of the biggest and most famous groves of these grand trees, forming stunning natural scenes.
5. Fastest Growth Rate: Coast Redwoods show remarkable growth speeds, with young trees gaining considerable height yearly. This quick growth helps create their towering size.
6. Carbon Storage: Because of their enormous size and long life, Coast Redwoods work well as carbon stores, capturing large amounts of carbon dioxide, making them useful tools against climate change.
7. Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* has won the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
