Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens*, sometimes called Californian redwood, is an impressive and towering evergreen conifer. Famous for reaching extraordinary heights, it ranks among the world’s tallest tree species. The needle-like leaves and characteristic reddish-brown bark give it a distinctive appearance. Thriving in humid, coastal conditions, the coast redwood makes an excellent choice for gardens and parks. Its commanding presence and ancient heritage create a striking centrepiece, linking us with nature’s grandeur and bringing a peaceful atmosphere. The beauty of Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* brings the wonder of these prehistoric giants to your garden.

This living link to our ancient past allows you to experience nature at its most impressive, making a memorable feature in any garden.

Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* currently appears as “Endangered” on the IUCN Red List, emphasising the critical importance of conservation work. These incredible giants, formerly common along North America’s western coastline, now encounter serious dangers from human development, climate shifts, forest fires, and plant diseases. Loss of natural habitat through timber harvesting and changing land use has badly affected their numbers. Being among Earth’s tallest and most ancient tree species, protecting Coast Redwoods matters not just for their environmental importance but also for preserving the variety of life and stability within their special forest habitats.

Work to safeguard and rebuild their natural homes remains vital to guarantee this famous species survives for coming generations.

Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* boasts several amazing achievements:

1. Highest Tree: Coast Redwoods are famous as Earth’s tallest trees. The present record-holder for the highest living tree is “Hyperion,” reaching an incredible height of roughly 379 feet (116 metres). Though fresh findings might reveal even taller examples.

2. Biggest Living System: Coast Redwood forests create one of our planet’s largest living systems through their connected root networks, called “clones.” These clones span vast regions and include genetically matching trees sharing combined root systems.

3. Most Ancient Tree: Though not the most ancient species, some individual Coast Redwoods have survived beyond 2,200 years, placing them among Earth’s most enduring trees.

4. Biggest Groves: California’s Coast Redwood forests, especially in places like Redwood National and State Parks, contain some of the most widespread and famous groves of these magnificent trees, forming breathtaking gardens.

5. Quickest Growth Speed: Coast Redwoods show remarkable growth speeds, with young trees gaining considerable height annually. This quick development helps create their soaring size.

6. Carbon Storage: Thanks to their enormous size and extended lifespan, Coast Redwoods work as efficient carbon stores, capturing large quantities of carbon dioxide, making them useful allies against climate change.

7. Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
