The Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* stands as one of nature’s most impressive vertical achievements. These 20/40cm specimens arrive in plastic-free cells, ready to begin their incredible journey from small saplings to towering giants. In their native habitat, these trees can reach heights of 116 metres, claiming the title of the world’s tallest living organisms, yet young plants show surprising adaptability to container growing, providing options for various garden settings.
Their RHS Award of Garden Merit confirms their suitability for British gardens, whilst their endangered conservation status makes cultivation particularly worthwhile. These specimens show excellent versatility, flourishing in pots through their juvenile years before maturing into magnificent specimen trees. With their fast growth and potential lifespan exceeding two thousand years, they create living links between generations past and future.
Coast Redwoods offer more than visual appeal – they excel at carbon capture, absorbing more CO2 than any other tree species. This ecological benefit, alongside their distinguished reputation and garden adaptability, makes them exceptional choices for environmentally conscious gardeners wanting to establish enduring natural heritage.
Coast Redwood *Sequoia sempervirens* boasts numerous impressive records:
1. Tallest Tree: Coast Redwoods hold the record as Earth’s tallest trees. “Hyperion,” the current tallest known specimen, measures approximately 379 feet (116 metres) in height, though ongoing discoveries may reveal even taller examples.
2. Largest Living Organism: Coast Redwood forests create one of the planet’s largest living organisms through their connected root networks, called “clones.” These clones span vast areas with genetically identical trees sharing unified root systems.
3. Oldest Tree: Though not the most ancient species, certain Coast Redwoods have survived over 2,200 years, ranking among Earth’s most long-lived trees.
4. Largest Groves: California’s Coast Redwood forests, especially within Redwood National and State Parks, contain some of the most spectacular and extensive groves of these magnificent trees, forming breathtaking natural gardens.
5. Fastest Growth Rate: Coast Redwoods show remarkable growth speeds, with young specimens gaining considerable height annually. This quick development contributes to their impressive mature size.
6. Carbon Sequestration: Their enormous size and extended lifespan make Coast Redwoods excellent carbon storage systems, capturing significant quantities of carbon dioxide and proving valuable in addressing climate change.
7. *Sequoia sempervirens* holds the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
These cell-grown *Sequoia sempervirens* require immediate planting, either directly or into suitable containers. For container growing, choose a pot at least 3-5 litres with good drainage holes, using a quality, well-draining compost mix. Position in full sun or partial shade, avoiding exposed, windy sites. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture while establishing, particularly during dry spells. If growing in pots, check moisture levels regularly as container plants dry out more quickly than those in the ground. While hardy once established, provide winter protection during the first year, especially for container-grown specimens. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage strong growth. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot.
