Coast Redwood – *Sequoia sempervirens* ‘Winter Blue’ creates dramatic seasonal changes with its eye-catching colour shifts. This quick-growing variety forms the typical cone shape, though what really makes it special is how the foliage changes colour. The needles stay lovely blue-green through summer, then turn a deeper silvery-blue when cold weather arrives, putting on quite a show in winter.
This colour change makes ‘Winter Blue’ really useful for winter interest, as those deeper blue shades give strong structure when everything else looks dull. When the garden’s looking pretty bland in winter, this tree shimmers away like a beacon, especially when frost or morning dew catches the needles.
From our specialist *Sequoia* range, this variety shows why Coast Redwoods keep winning over gardeners. It grows fast so gets going quickly, and that natural cone shape forms by itself without much fuss. Young trees soon become proper statement pieces, with their changing colours marking each season.
Just like other Coast Redwoods, *Sequoia sempervirens* ‘Winter Blue’ adds height and drama, but with extra seasonal flair. Those blue-tinted needles work well with all sorts of other plants, giving interest all year round as the colours subtly shift.
Works brilliantly on its own or mixed in with other conifers – either way, it brings real presence to gardens. The mix of classic redwood style with that extra winter colour makes ‘Winter Blue’ perfect for bigger gardens where you can really see how it performs through the seasons.
Plant *Sequoia sempervirens* ‘Winter Blue’ in a sunny or partly shaded position to optimise foliage colour. Well-draining soil is essential. While hardy once established, young plants benefit from shelter against harsh winds. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. The natural pyramidal form needs minimal pruning. Apply a mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
