The Giant Sequoia Sequoiadendron giganteum, also called the giant redwood, appears on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as “Endangered”. This status indicates the species is at very high risk of becoming extinct in its natural habitat.
Past logging and continuing habitat destruction are the main reasons for the giant sequoia’s endangered status. Climate change, disease, and wildfires pose ongoing threats to these ancient trees, even with conservation work in place. Safeguarding their wild habitats and growing your own tree are vital for helping Sequoiadendron giganteum survive for years to come.
Growing rapidly to heights well above 30m (100ft), these massive conifers become truly impressive specimens. The Wellingtonia shows a distinctive narrow cone shape with a pointed crown, plus striking reddish brown bark that catches the light beautifully at sunset.
Giant Sequoia Sequoiadendron giganteum – A massive, long-living evergreen that can exceed 100m in height. This endangered species needs our help. Support conservation by planting your own tree. These giants once grew across Europe and Asia, but now survive only on California’s West coast where wildfires and changing climate put them at risk.
They’re becoming more popular across Britain and you’ll spot them in gardens and parks nationwide. Scotland hosts the tallest UK specimen – a 150-year-old tree over 55m tall. They regularly appear on lists of Britain’s biggest, tallest, oldest and most impressive trees.
Giant Sequoia Sequoiadendron giganteum holds many remarkable records:
1. Biggest Trees: Giant sequoias rank among Earth’s largest living things, with some reaching incredible heights above 300 feet (91 metres).
2. Ancient Trees: Though not quite as old as bristlecone pines, giant sequoias still count among the world’s most ancient trees, with some thought to be over 3,000 years old.
3. Greatest Volume: For sheer bulk, nothing matches the giant sequoia. Their enormous trunks and hefty branches create unmatched girth and size.
4. Biggest Tree by Volume: California’s Sequoia National Park houses the “General Sherman” tree, which holds the record for largest tree by volume at roughly 52,500 cubic feet (1,487 cubic metres).
5. Widest Base: The “General Grant” tree in Kings Canyon National Park, California, known as the “Nation’s Christmas Tree”, comes second by volume but has the widest base at about 107 feet (32.6 metres) around.
6. Biggest Grove: Sequoia National Park’s Giant Forest contains one of the most famous and largest collections of these magnificent trees.
These records make Sequoiadendron giganteum truly remarkable, drawing wildlife lovers and conservation work to protect these incredible giants for the future.
