The Western Hemlock Tsuga heterophylla is an elegant evergreen that adds a refined, peaceful quality to gardens. Its flat, feathery sprays of dark green needles create beautiful flowing lines, with drooping branch tips that give the tree its distinctive graceful character. This large conifer maintains a light, delicate appearance that won’t dominate your space.

The soft needles grow in two rows, showing dark green on top and silvery underneath, which creates an attractive colour contrast when moved by the wind. Small cones develop in spring and provide additional visual appeal throughout the summer months. This tree makes an ideal backdrop for woodland plants and offers natural shelter for birds.

Native to the Pacific coast of North America, the Western Hemlock has thrived in British gardens since the Victorian era. Its refined shape makes it perfect for larger gardens, where it works well for creating sheltered spots or as an impressive feature tree. You can leave the lower branches to reach the ground for a natural appearance, or raise them up to plant shade-loving species underneath.

Western Hemlock grows best in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It’s happy in full sun or partial shade and appreciates some shelter from strong winds. Young trees need regular watering until established, but mature specimens are relatively drought tolerant. While it can handle pruning well, it rarely needs more than the occasional removal of dead or crossing branches. A mulch of leaf mould or pine needles around the base helps maintain soil moisture and acidity.
