The Balsam Fir is a lovely evergreen conifer from North America. Abies balsamea grows wild across Canada and the northeastern United States. It thrives in cool, moist climates. This makes it well suited to many parts of Britain, especially in the north and west.

This tree has a classic Christmas tree shape. It forms a neat, narrow pyramid with branches right down to the ground. The needles are dark green on top with two silvery stripes beneath. When crushed, they release a wonderful balsam scent. This fresh, resinous fragrance is one of the tree’s best features.

This is a tree that looks good all year round. The dense foliage stays fresh and green through winter. The silvery undersides of the needles catch the light beautifully. Small purple cones appear near the top of mature trees. These stand upright on the branches and add interest in autumn.

The Balsam Fir works well as a specimen tree on a lawn. Its neat shape needs no pruning to look smart. It also makes a fine addition to a woodland garden. Plant it with other conifers and shade-loving plants for a natural feel.

This tree stays fairly compact compared to some firs. It typically reaches 15 to 20 metres in Britain. This makes it suitable for medium to large gardens. It grows at a moderate pace, adding around 30cm per year once established.

Once settled in, the Balsam Fir needs little attention. Water during dry spells, especially in the first few years. A mulch of bark chips helps keep the roots cool and moist. No regular pruning is needed.

This is a tree that brings year-round beauty and a wonderful scent to your garden. Plant one and enjoy it for decades to come.

Natural Germination: Balsam Fir seeds need a period of cold to break dormancy. Sow them outdoors in late autumn or early winter. Natural cold and moisture over winter will prepare them for germination in spring.

Artificial Stratification: To stratify seeds indoors, first soak them in water for 24 hours. Then mix the seeds with damp sand or vermiculite in a sealed plastic bag. Place in the fridge at around 3-5°C for 30 days. Check regularly to keep the medium moist but not soggy. Seeds may begin to germinate during this cold period, so check them towards the end.
