The Monkey Puzzle Tree Araucaria araucana is a striking evergreen with a unique appearance – its often spreading branches display spirals of sharp, triangular foliage. You’ll often spot these trees in larger gardens and parks across Britain.

This tree is also called the Chile pine and comes from Chile and Argentina, where it’s sadly an endangered species in the wild.

The name ‘monkey puzzle’ supposedly came about when someone visiting a Cornish estate commented that the tree would puzzle any monkey trying to climb it.

Most Monkey Puzzle Trees Araucaria araucana are dioecious, meaning male and female cones appear on different trees. Male cones are elongated and oval whilst female cones are round in shape. Wind carries out pollination. Female cones take several years to ripen, turning brown before dropping to the ground. Grey squirrels and jays find these fallen cones quite appealing.

This is a slow-growing tree, typically reaching 6m x 3m after a decade. Eventually though, it grows to 25m tall and 10m wide, so you’ll need a large garden. These trees can live for more than 1,000 years.

Monkey Puzzle trees are surprisingly easy to grow in most gardens. They need well-drained soil but aren’t fussy about soil type. Plant them in full sun or partial shade, making sure they have plenty of space to grow. Young trees need regular watering for the first couple of years, but once established, they’re quite drought-tolerant. They don’t need pruning and are generally pest-free. These trees are very wind-resistant but might need protection from harsh winds when young. They grow well in most parts of Britain, particularly in mild, humid areas. Be careful when handling the tree as the leaves are very sharp – it’s best to wear thick gloves when planting.
