Arizona Cypress – Cupressus arizonica is a handsome evergreen conifer that brings year-round structure and silvery-blue foliage to gardens. Native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, this hardy cypress has adapted remarkably well to cultivation in temperate climates. The aromatic, scale-like foliage forms dense sprays that create an attractive pyramidal shape, making it an excellent choice for screening, windbreaks, or as a specimen tree. The silvery-grey bark peels away in attractive strips, adding winter interest and textural contrast to the garden.

This robust conifer produces small, rounded cones that mature from green to brown, typically measuring 2-3cm across. The foliage releases a pleasant, resinous scent when brushed against, particularly noticeable on warm days. Arizona Cypress tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, though it performs best in well-drained soils and full sun positions. Its natural drought tolerance once established makes it particularly valuable in drier gardens or exposed sites where other conifers might struggle.

The silvery-blue colouration intensifies in full sun and provides excellent contrast against darker evergreens or deciduous trees. Arizona Cypress works beautifully in mixed borders, Mediterranean-style plantings, or formal settings where its neat, conical habit can be appreciated. The dense foliage provides valuable shelter for birds and small wildlife throughout the year.

Growing Arizona Cypress

Plant Arizona Cypress in a sunny position with well-drained soil. While it tolerates various soil types including chalky, clay, and sandy soils, good drainage is essential to prevent root problems during wet winter months. Dig a generous planting hole and incorporate organic matter to improve soil structure. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system.

Once established, Arizona Cypress demonstrates excellent drought tolerance and requires minimal watering except during prolonged dry spells. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Mulch around the base with organic matter to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch clear of the trunk to prevent rot.

Pruning is rarely necessary as the tree naturally maintains its attractive pyramidal shape. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring. Avoid heavy pruning as Arizona Cypress does not regenerate readily from old wood. The tree is generally pest and disease resistant, though good air circulation helps prevent fungal issues in humid conditions.

Arizona Cypress tolerates exposure, coastal conditions, and atmospheric pollution, making it suitable for urban gardens. It handles cold temperatures well once established, though young plants benefit from protection during severe frosts in their first winter. The tree’s moderate growth rate and manageable size make it suitable for medium to large gardens where a vertical accent or evergreen screen is desired.
