The Blue Colorado Spruce ‘Edith’ is a truly stunning evergreen tree with intense silvery-blue needles that catch the light beautifully. This slow-growing variety keeps a lovely neat, conical shape without much fuss. The blue-grey colour stays strong all year round, making it a brilliant choice for adding winter interest to gardens. Its compact size makes it perfect for smaller spaces, where it can act as a lovely focal point. The needles have a wonderful frosted appearance that looks particularly magical on frosty mornings or when caught in winter sunshine. Unlike larger spruces, ‘Edith’ maintains a manageable size, reaching only about 3-4 metres over many years. This makes it ideal for modern gardens where space might be limited. The strong architectural shape works brilliantly in both formal and informal garden settings. It’s particularly good at adding structure to borders and creating year-round interest.
Blue Spruce ‘Edith’ is quite easy to grow in most garden conditions. It prefers well-drained soil in full sun, which helps develop the best blue colour. While young plants need regular watering, established trees are quite drought-tolerant. They don’t need regular pruning, though you can trim lightly in late winter to maintain shape if desired. Feed with a general evergreen fertiliser in spring. Watch out for signs of aphids in spring, but otherwise, these trees are generally trouble-free.
