The Atlas Cedar Cedrus atlantica is a magnificent evergreen tree that adds North African mountain elegance to British gardens. Originally from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria, this conifer stands out with its beautiful blue-green needles and substantial size.

When young, Atlas Cedars form a pyramid shape, but as they age they develop a more spreading, flat-topped appearance. The needles are short and rigid, arranged in thick clusters that create a dense, full look. The blue-green needle colour is especially attractive, particularly in varieties like the well-known ‘Glauca’.

What makes the Atlas Cedar particularly appealing is its all-year appeal. Beyond its evergreen foliage, the tree develops large, upright, barrel-shaped cones on its branches. These cones need up to two years to fully develop, providing additional visual interest to the tree.

Atlas Cedars grow slowly but live for many years, making them a worthwhile investment for your garden’s long-term future. They can grow to considerable heights over time, becoming a stunning centrepiece in spacious gardens. The wide-spreading branches create lovely dappled shade areas, ideal for summer relaxation.

These trees offer more than just good looks; they’re valuable for wildlife too. Birds frequently nest and shelter in them, whilst the cone seeds feed various animals. The thick foliage also works as an effective windbreak, making the Atlas Cedar both practical and attractive in gardens.

Atlas Cedars prefer full sun and well-drained soil. They’re tolerant of various soil types but don’t do well in waterlogged conditions. Plant in a sheltered spot to protect from harsh winds, especially when young. Water regularly during the first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, they’re quite drought-tolerant. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches, as these trees naturally maintain their shape. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring if growth seems slow. Be patient, as Atlas Cedars are slow-growing but will reward you with their beauty over many years.
