The Cedar of Lebanon *Cedrus libani* stands as one of nature’s most magnificent conifers, steeped in ancient history and biblical references. This majestic tree grows at a steady pace and, with adequate space and patience, develops into an outstanding specimen that can tower beyond 35 metres. The tree’s distinctive flat-topped profile comes from its horizontal branching pattern, creating the layered structure that makes it instantly recognisable. Dense clusters of short, dark green needles clothe the branches, providing year-round interest and a rich, textured appearance.
Young Cedar of Lebanon trees display a neat conical form, gradually transforming as they mature into the classic broad, flat-crowned shape that graces many historic estates and parklands. During autumn months, prominent upright cones appear on the upper branches. These impressive cones take several seasons to fully develop before eventually disintegrating naturally on the tree to disperse their seeds.
Beyond its striking appearance, this cedar proves wonderfully hardy once settled in. It copes well with dry conditions after establishment and withstands harsh winds admirably. The tree provides excellent habitat for birds and smaller wildlife seeking shelter. Although historically prized for its fragrant, durable timber, today’s specimens are grown chiefly for their ornamental appeal and cultural importance.
