The Cedar of Lebanon Cedrus libani stands as one of the most storied trees in history, with roots deep in ancient culture. This majestic conifer grows at a leisurely pace, but given proper space and time, it transforms into an outstanding specimen that can soar beyond 35 metres in height. The tree’s distinctive flat-topped crown develops from horizontal branching that creates striking layered tiers. Dense clusters of short, dark green needles clothe the branches, providing rich texture and year-round appeal.
Young Cedar of Lebanon trees display a classic pyramid form, gradually developing their famous flat-topped outline as they mature – a feature that has made them prized additions to grand gardens and parkland settings. During autumn, impressive upright cones appear along the upper branches. These substantial cones take multiple years to ripen fully before splitting apart naturally on the tree to disperse their seeds.
Beyond its striking appearance, this tree proves wonderfully tough and adaptable. Well-established specimens cope admirably with dry conditions and resist damage from strong winds. The tree provides excellent habitat for wildlife, creating shelter for numerous bird species and small mammals. Although its timber was historically prized for construction due to its strength and fragrant qualities, today these trees are grown mainly for their ornamental appeal and cultural importance.
